Left this morning at 7 AM by myself, usually we leave as the slow group of 5 but I couldn't find anyone so I just left. The day was overcast and this morning upon leaving the temperature was 39 degrees. Luckily the wind was from the west so it provided a 10-15 mph tailwind or crosswind a cyclists favorite kind. The beginning of the ride was flat and getting out of the city was fairly easy -- not a lot of traffic.  We went through some forests and then after a moderate climb came to grasslands and cattle ranches for miles and miles and miles.  I know why they call this Big Sky its just so vast and open.. Later came back to a main highway for a 25 mile ride on Route 12 into Helena, the capital of Montana.  Part of this ride was a 4 mile climb of over a 100 feet with grades between 8-9%. For some reason the Garmin broke the ride into two parts so there are two

The overall ride was 125 miles but I decided to do only 100 miles so I would have energy for the 122 mile ride tomorrow.. I ended up getting in the van for about 10 miles after lunch and then biked 30 miles until the climb -- I then hopped in the van to the summit of Mac Donalds pass and got back on the bike for a 15 mile downhill ride to the DoubleTree Hotel.  Five of those miles were at a 8-9% downward slope  scary but great views.  I feel like I cheat each time I get in the van but I am trying to be reasonable and make sure I can do at least a 100 miles a day for this three day run.

Unique advertising -- After miles of grasslands this is a
welcome sight

Too Good for a Magic Bus

Riding along the river

Scene from lunch

Don't see haystacks very often anymore

From the middle of the pass

Don't see many signs like this in Jersey

Now thats a lot of hay
After this sign I thought a Grizzly might come by

Tried to show the vastness and the "Big Sky"
