I slept for 9.5 hours -- something I rarely do -- guess I was tired! Left around 7:15 am with the other slow people. The guides decided since we needed more time we got to leave first. The first 20 miles out of Portland were flat and on a bike path. Passed many homeless tents along the path. They were on the banks of the river overlooking Portland -- Great view no rent horrible life style. No traffic and quite a delight. The only hang up was we came to a closed part but luckily the guide was with us and got us through a part of town and then back to the path. We ended up going partly on the Columbia River Highway and then switched over to the Hood River Highway. The trip over and to the hotel had the scenery to date -- spectacular! Unfortunately it was quite a strenuous as there were many climbs at a signifciant grade. Lunch was at mile 59 (at subway Ugh!) and then the 20 mile ascent to the peak of Mt Hood -- I took the van and didn't need to feel bad there were 6 others including the guide for part of the way. At mile 83 I was the only one to get ou and cruise down Mt Hood to the town 30 miles away. All in all I did 87 miles.
I almost bonked (cyclists term for crashing physically) at mile 55 and even though it was downhill I could only muster about 8-9 mph. The guide was with me as I was the last in for lunch. Then the van. I was rejuvinated by mile 83 for the descent.
Had my first massage tonight.. A true deep tissue sports massage -- Hope it does the trick for tomorrow which is also another unbelievable challenge. I will van it part way again.

Who wouldn't bonk after a Subway lunch? Lol. Great photos, Paul. Next time you do this ride I'm going to follow along in my car with my photo equipment. I'll be your personal photojournalist for the trip.
