Day 4 Hood River to Condon OR

Started the morning by having our luggage at the van by 5:30 then off to Bette's Cafe for breakfast at 5:30 for the long day ahead.  The beginning of the ride was all up hill along the Columbia River. The scenery was spectacular especially as the sun started to shine on the river.  The ride across the river to Washington was on an old bridge and we had to ride a very narrow sidewalk on the bridge  -- a hair nerve racking. Once over we went east along the river in the Dalles and then back across to Oregon for the rest of the trip.  There was a 10 mile climb of 1000 feet or so to lunch. I decided to get in the van and go from about the 66 I had biker to mile 84 and then bike the rest of the way in. The scenry was stark, the temperature about 102. As we were driving to mile 84 we picked up about half the group because of the heat and the steady climbs.  At mile 84 I decided it was best to pack it in and just go to the hotel. A wise decision I think.  It was interesting to be in the van as they picked people up and would go to them when they ran out of water or were just bonked.  Tomorrow I have decided to ride the whole 90 miles with 4200 feet of climbing after my long rest today.

Great sunrise along the river

Do I look excited or what?

A few switchbacks

Dramatic scenery
More shots of the river.

There's that bridge I talked about

The second state!

The Dalles

Horrible scenery and 106 degrees want to ride?

Truck has seen better days

When we move away from the river to the end is where
the scenery changed and I decided to van it!
