We left about 7 am for the 103 miles across Idaho. The weather was much chiller and the sky
overcast. Once out of town the scenery again turned to wheat fields – some
harvested some still to be harvested.
Then the terrain turned to woods and we did a 22 mile climb through the
forest --- yes folks 22 miles with grades ranging from 2% to 8%. The road (Route 12 I believe) was heavily
traveled and they drive as crazy here as in NJ - a lot of truck hauling wheat. The rumble strips are cyclist’s nightmare,
drivers don’t know they are there till they swerve off but we need to be
careful as they can give you a real jolt.
By the time I arrived at the top I was a tired guy, but there was
Trek waiting with snacks and water etc.
The next 20 miles to lunch was basically downhill (Idaho Route 62 was
great no traffic and freshly paved – no potholes) with some wheat but nothing to write home
about. At lunch I decided to bump the
next grind up hill and got in the van for 15 miles. After that I did about 25 miles, basically
down hill along the Clearwater River. You could see the river almost the whole
way because the road was right next to the river. Had it been a nice day the
ride would have been perfect. The ride reminded me of the ride along the Broad
River in NC on my first cross country bike adventure. The other downer for the
last 25 miles was that it was raining – lightly but raining. At this stop three of us share a cabin- each
has his own room but we share a bath. Really roughing it here in the
wilderness.
Great Scenery |
That train on the left just went on and on and on |
Rest stop fun. Tara (the masseuse) finds a friend |

Another barn! |
We followed the river into the lodge about 10 miles was just starting to rain |
This farm is a little bigger than the typical NJ farm |
Anybody need an old chevy or dodge or ford truck |
At least the guy pulled over! Many truck like this pass at very high speeds -- its always better when there is a shoulder |
For some reason the Garmin split the whole trip into 3 parts!
