Day 1 Dipping the Tire in the Pacific
Met folks at the Lucia Hotel before leaving for a two hour bus ride to Astoria. People seem to be well traveled and many have done extensive bike trips in Europe and the United States -- mostly with Trek. Most seem to be seasoned cyclists -- on fellow was telling me has done the 200 mile Seattle to Portland ride (10,000 people or so)in one day and has completed it about 10 times and his climbed some of the alps that the Tour De France transverses -- needless to say he is a little ahead of me.
After arriving in Astoria (59 degrees and overcast), we had a great gourmet lunch and then all set out for the ocean (a 15 mile ride) in a group but then separated. I was at the end finally with a fellow rider and unfortunately we got lost. We were the last to get there. All had already dipped their bikes and were ready to return. I went and dipped the bike and when I got back only one guide was there. We rode together (He was pushing me at about 18-19 mph) until we met up with my fellow traveler from before. The guide then took off to meet the others and I went back to 13-15 mph. Upon return to the hotel there were snacks etc.. The room is unbelievable -- right on the water and well appointed -- Trek does do it right.
Tonight there is a social hour and dinner and then tomorrow we do the first 100 miles. Most on the trip are not phased at all by the climbing. Wow! During introductions at dinner it turns out I am still the oldest one! Sort of two groups have formed those who have done the trip already and those that have not!
