Did QiGong when I awoke at 5:30 and went down for breakfast at 6:30 and then we took off at 8:00 for the 100 mile ride with 4700 feet of climbing. The first 40 miles were on a low traffic road that wound through the woods. Very peaceful and serene. During this ride there was a 10 mile climb that was not all that bad. Had lunch in a campground at 1:00 at 54.7 miles.  After continuing 10 miles there was a 3 mile climb that we steeper than this mornings.  Finally out of woods and on to the Columbian River Highway for 16 miles.  Bad riding even with wide shoulders..  Too much traffic and enviornmentally offense scenery along the highway.  One of the guides met me on highway and guided me to the hotel 9 miles away.  So happy he did -- many turns and unbelievable traffic.

Of course I was dead last the entire trip but for me I averaged a decent speed. I am tired and really do not know why I have completed many centuries with similar statistics.  As we rode through the city there wer many homeless. In places (especially below the bridges) there are tent cities set up. How can there be this kind of contrast --  I'm at the Marriott having a shower and a great meal they are in the cold scrouning for food and existance.

Tomorrow is 100 miles and 8800 feet of climbing -- the guides are suggesting I "bump' go several miles in the van so I can keep up some pace similar ot the others.

Ready to role at 8:00 AM 100 miles to go!

  1. Karen and I are making a nightly ritual of reading these posts! Great pics! Always hard to see so much clear cutting and so many people without basic needs. Looking forward to hearing more about the ride. Hopefully there won’t continue to be so much traffic. Be safes and good luck!
