Today was a cyclist's dream almost.  This morning it was 41 degrees and when I arrived at the Super 8 (a truck stop of I90 in Columbus MT - the only place in town) it was 92 -- quite a range hey?  The first 20 miles or so were spectacular but the rest was just grass lands with tons of cows. Overall the trip was down hill for about 90 miles with a tailwind!  However parts of the ride we were on and off I 90 because it was the  only road available to get us to our destination.  At two bridges going over the Yellowstone River there was no shoulder so we were riding in the slow lane on an interstate. Pretty Intense!  The rest of the roads paralleled the interstate and had almost no traffic.  When you look at the elevation diagram below you can see the first 20 miles contain a climb.  I decided to van it from the motel this morning. Tara let me out at mile 17 so of the 110 miles I did about 93 or so. 

Yesterday Tara was parked in a gas station and was side swiped by a huge 18 wheeler. She so it happen from the food mart and saw the driver go right on.  The food mart got the video and they gave it to the police.  The drivers side mirror and fender are mashed along with the axle. They called Trek and they are sending another van that just finished in Glacier Park. Today we only had one support van but it is amazing how Trek handles these situations.

They came and gave me a van ride 5 miles to lunch so we could all be together.  When I got to the pizza place Ann had already arrived and my nephew Scott was there as well.  What a great surprise and honor it was for him to take the day off from work and drive up from Connecuit to see the momentous occasion. A Recovery Ride

Trek Travel suggests that you take a week off before beginning the journey across the US.  So after the big day Monday I rested Tuesday and only did 45 minutes and about 13 miles with no hills today.  Tomorrow is anothe rest day with an easy recovery ride on Friday.  Yesterday for the rest day, my wife and I drove from Tillamook to Cannon Beach for dinner.  The place was awesome -- one of the best meals we have ever had! If your ever here go to Newmansat988.  Almost every town of reasonable size has a cannabis store. Pretty soon NJ will have the kind of signs. Went to Urgent Care for the shingles. The doctor indicated that with the medicine I should be OK by Sunday --- lets hope so.  Was fascinated by the Police Bike made by Trek -- it even has it marked right on the bike!  The cop indicated that he only rides about 30 miles a day and that the bike is quite heavy ...

DAY 43Piseco NY to Ticonderoga NY 84 miles 3968 fee tclimbing

Please send comments to this blog or   bikerat70@gmail.com or 908-268-4250 Overcast and 39 degrees when I left at around 7 AM.  The leaves are really starting to have more color and because of the cold there was a lot of mist/fog off the lakes and rivers early in AM.  I used my winter gloves for the first time and shoe covers to keep my feet warm.  I kept them on all day except for the gloves. I had arranged for a van ride at mile 32 for a 4 mile climb. Unfortunately there was miscommunication and I pedaled all the way up. The descent of course was great.  Lunch was at a combination bike shop and cafe. By the way many of the roads and even this lunch spot were part of the Cycle Adirondacks bike trip I took last year.  After lunch I did get the van up the next ascent which was much steeper. I biked the remaining 15 miles into Ticonderoga which included a 5 mile descent and a ride along Lake George. Everyday is a good day even if the weather isn...
