Today was sunny all day and started out about 50 degrees and ended up about 76. Usually I write that the beginning 30 miles has fantastic scenery -- not true today. Horrible landscape for the first 30 miles and then beautiful as we started to ascend the black hills of Wyoming which of course lead to the black hills of South Dakota (Mount Rushmore). There was a constant 15-20 mph headwind or cross wind for the ENTIRE ride. If you think wind against you doesn't affect you try it!
I rode to lunch at mile 53 and then started an intense 8% - 12% climb against the wind. You know what Jim Croce said "Don't spit into the wind", he was right and I add don't climb and deal with a headwind at the same time. My fellow riders did it but I decided to get in the van half way up. In fact they came back to see how I was doing and I jumped at the chance to van it. At the peak and about 6 miles to go to the end of the ride, I got back on the bike and had a fabulous descent to the Best Western. The highlight of the ride today was to take an extra 13 mile add on to ride out to Devil's Tower National Monument. I skipped going and took pictures from the highway!

ReplyDeleteGetting in the van and skipping to the good parts seems like the way to do it to me! ;-)
