Today was the most difficult day so far. There were head winds at 20-25 mph and one roller after the other. Doing down the hill didn't even bring a lot of speed so imagine going up the hill. I made it to the 30 mile check point and took the van 20 miles on I 90, where my fellow riders were riding, to Wall and had lunch at the side of the road that was provided by Trek. If you haven't heard of Wall Drugstore, it is amazing. Located in the middle of nowhere but they have a huge volume of business. After lunch I got back on the bike because I wanted to bike through the badlands. Unfortunately it was 8 miles of head winds and rollers just to get to the entrance. Once again at about 4 miles I got in the van with two other riders. Once we entered the park and there was a 2-3 mile descent I got out to ride down the others didn't. I'm glad I did it was spectacular. At the bottom and before the next hill against the wind climb I reentered the van and took it the rest of the way to the hotel
Kadota has a population of 600. The motel is the best in town and if it is the best I hate to see the worst. Dinner was at Club 27. It too left a lot to be desired. Hey flexibility is the answer and we go with the flow!
I only biked 45.5 miles out of the 113 and 2047 out of the 4014.

Wow! Love the badlands. It must’ve been great getting the chance to ride through them. We are planning on getting out there next fall.
ReplyDeleteThe Badlands are incredible. Seeing pictures of them is just not the same as being there. When I was there in '63, we got caught in a sudden hail storm. We took shelter immediately as hail the size of hard balls bounced all around us! It was scary, but a memorable experience. Good luck traveling through The Black Hills Paul. I hope you got to see Mt. Rushmore!
ReplyDeleteNice photos of the Badlands! Also thanks for providing that shot showing proof you were there...was starting to doubt you were actually on this whole “bike trip”
