Day 32 Milwaukee WI to Holland MI 40 miles 700 feet of climbing

Today we rode the ferry across Lake Michigan and arrived in Muskogee MI, from there we cycled 40 miles south to Holland MI. Unfortunately the ferry did not leave until 12:30 and takes 2.5 hours to cross. We had rest time until 11 am before we biked the 3 miles to the terminal. Once arriving in Muskogee the time changed to Eastern time so it was really  4 pm when we got started. I predicted I would arrive in Holland at 7 pm which was an accurate prediction. Took a quick shower and by the time I got to a restaurant it was 8 pm.  The ferry ride was a little rough but nothing earth shaking and the ride to Holland had some bike path travel but the majority of the ride was on Lake Shore drive. A well kept road with a great shoulder, and most of it was downhill. What more could a cyclist want? Even the weather was cooperating.  I was surprised how residential the ride was and finally surmised that was because of the popularity of having houses on a lake.  I really only saw the lake once or twice. Other times both sidesof the road were lined with trees. Quite pleasant actually. Coming into Holland was a little depressing -- a lot of factories and electric generating plants.

Ferry we took, I had imagined a much smaller boat, but sucne it is
a 75 mile crossing and to go around is 270  miles I guess
its popular

They came and gave me a van ride 5 miles to lunch so we could all be together.  When I got to the pizza place Ann had already arrived and my nephew Scott was there as well.  What a great surprise and honor it was for him to take the day off from work and drive up from Connecuit to see the momentous occasion. A Recovery Ride

Trek Travel suggests that you take a week off before beginning the journey across the US.  So after the big day Monday I rested Tuesday and only did 45 minutes and about 13 miles with no hills today.  Tomorrow is anothe rest day with an easy recovery ride on Friday.  Yesterday for the rest day, my wife and I drove from Tillamook to Cannon Beach for dinner.  The place was awesome -- one of the best meals we have ever had! If your ever here go to Newmansat988.  Almost every town of reasonable size has a cannabis store. Pretty soon NJ will have the kind of signs. Went to Urgent Care for the shingles. The doctor indicated that with the medicine I should be OK by Sunday --- lets hope so.  Was fascinated by the Police Bike made by Trek -- it even has it marked right on the bike!  The cop indicated that he only rides about 30 miles a day and that the bike is quite heavy ...

DAY 43Piseco NY to Ticonderoga NY 84 miles 3968 fee tclimbing

Please send comments to this blog or   bikerat70@gmail.com or 908-268-4250 Overcast and 39 degrees when I left at around 7 AM.  The leaves are really starting to have more color and because of the cold there was a lot of mist/fog off the lakes and rivers early in AM.  I used my winter gloves for the first time and shoe covers to keep my feet warm.  I kept them on all day except for the gloves. I had arranged for a van ride at mile 32 for a 4 mile climb. Unfortunately there was miscommunication and I pedaled all the way up. The descent of course was great.  Lunch was at a combination bike shop and cafe. By the way many of the roads and even this lunch spot were part of the Cycle Adirondacks bike trip I took last year.  After lunch I did get the van up the next ascent which was much steeper. I biked the remaining 15 miles into Ticonderoga which included a 5 mile descent and a ride along Lake George. Everyday is a good day even if the weather isn...
