Really weird day of biking today.  My intention was to complete all 90 miles of the ride, but in reality I only completed 46 miles and 1672 feet of climbing.  I left extra early and at mile 8.5 I got a flat on the back wheel. Tried to fix it but in the interim I called Blake who was at mile 3. By the time he got to me with the van I still didn't even have the the tire off the rim.  He solved the problem by bringing me a new wheel.  He took the flat one, and by the time I got to snacks he had fixed it and showed me the small piece of metal that had caused the trouble. Right after the snack at mile 20 it started to rain, at times moderately other times torrential.  By the time I got to snack stop 2 at 35 miles I got in the van to go the 15 miles to lunch because I was so far behind.  At lunch it was still raining. I was wet and cold, my rain jacket is completely useless. I   changed into a dry top and left the socks and pants on.  My intention again was to bike the next 40 miles from lunch. However I was shaking from the cold and thought it best to go the next 17 in the van and then get out. As we left lunch spot,  there was a torrential rain storm going on as well.   Along the way however we had to backtrack to help another rider who had a flat. This process put us way behind the others that had gone on. Tara wanted them to have snacks so she was proceeding to find the beginning of the pack.  She never got to the front and finally stopped about mile 12 from the end. I got out and biked the 12 miles in with a brilliant blue sky as a companion.  I'm disappointed that I only completed half the ride.  Tomorrow's ride is 120 miles, my goal is to go at least 100.

This is what I saw out the van window at lunch
when I decided to van the next set of miles
Wise thinking hey?
I know the two on the left but who is the one on the right.

Big equipment

Old truck -- no barns

Notice the path. I biked to the blue line (the river) and then the straight line is van time, the rest
is the last 12 miles or so.

  1. Always another day, congrats on still doing 46. Probably a smart move to stay out of the rain. You would’ve missed a lot more of the trip if you caught the flu from biking in crappy weather

  2. Only one flat the whole trip so far? Not bad. I get a flat while my bike is still in the garage. Of course it has to be the rear wheel. I HATE changing the rear tire.
